Montana Housing Assistance Relocated For Now
Funding For Montana Low Income Families On Pause
The Montana Section 8 program which helps low income families with rent assistance has had a major interruption in their funding.
According to the announcement from the Montana Department of Commerce, the Federal government is having to use funding for other states that have a shortfall in their funding.
The pause was announced August 1st and goes into place on August 15th until there is more funding available.

What Does This Mean For Montana
The announcement on their page states, "The Housing Choice Voucher waiting list is currently closed, effective August 15, 2024, due to decreased funding disbursements from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Housing Choice Vouchers will not be issued to existing waitlist applicants until the waiting list is reopened or until such time federal funding disbursements allow."
Anyone who is currently on the waiting list for housing vouchers has already had their application completed and is waiting for their turn to get funding.
What Can Montana Do?
Governor Greg Gianforte reportedly sent a letter in July requesting the HUD Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman to reconsider the pause in Montana's benefit which will likely put many Montana citizens at risk of becoming homeless.

There is no word at this time of when the waitlist will be reopened. There does not seem to be any effect on current Section 8 vouchers but anyone on the waitlist will be impacted by the pause until more information is released.
