With the fall hunting season getting underway across the state, it's time for another set of safety reminders, but for those of us who aren't hunting.

Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks has put up some advice for non-hunters wanting to enjoy the outdoors during hunting season.

Their list has five points, which honestly sounds a little on the low side.  The items are all basic common sense stuff that just about anyone who has been through a hunting season should be at least vaguely aware of, like:

  • Wear bright colors.  If you didn't think this would be number one, maybe you should stay inside.
  • Stay on the marked trails.  Hunting season is not the time for trailblazing.
  • Don't be too quiet.  If you just have to be in the great outdoors and think there may be hunters in the area, make noise that indicates "Human in the area".  Yes, if there are hunters, they may be upset that you're scaring away game, but I think everyone will be happier if you aren't mistaken for game.
  • Be wise about when you go.  Figure out when most hunters in your area will be active and be in the great outdoors outside of those times.
  • Pay attention for signs.  If you see visible signs of hunters, like people offloading their gear from vehicles, maybe come back another time.  Or if you see actual signs saying that the area is open for hunting, go somewhere else.

Okay, so those are the tips MT FWP has for us, but like I said, it seems a little short in my opinion.  What would you add to this list?
