What To Do If You Hit A Deer In Montana
First of all, be sure to be driving as safely as possible. Drive sober, be buckled and use your headlights and high beams appropriately. If a crash is inevitable then MDT says to use the following steps:
- Try not to swerve away as this could cause more issues.
- Honk your horn and try flashing your high beams.
- If braking while trying to avoid the animal let up on your breaks so the front of your car lifts up and can hopefully avoid the animal crashing into your windshield.
- If you do hit an animal pull off to the side of the road and turn on emergency lights. Be aware of traffic around you.
- Don’t try to move an animal from the roadway and don't touch or approach the animal. Call MHP at 855-647-3777.
