Being a working mom in Montana, and really across America, is still a pretty new thing when you look back at the history of humans.

A lot of moms deal with that guilt of dropping the kids off at daycare or leaving them at home and heading to work. It’s not easy for moms out there, but some states are doing more than others to help make it a little better.

Recently, WalletHub took a look at which states are doing the best job supporting working moms.

They factored in everything from childcare costs and school quality to pay equity, job opportunities, and work-life balance, then ranked each state from best to worst.

And when you look at Montana, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Childcare can be more expensive in bigger cities, but smaller towns don’t always have the same job opportunities. That can mean longer commutes or tougher choices, so it really is a balancing act.

So where do we land?

According to WalletHub, Montana still has some work to do. We came in at #32 overall, which honestly feels like a “needs improvement” kind of grade.

Childcare and professional opportunities both landed in the bottom half at #33 and #35. But there is a bit of good news in there.

Montana ranked #14 for work-life balance, which puts us in the top half.

At the end of the day, a lot of moms are making it work. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy. Compared to other states, it can take a little more effort, a little more juggling, and a lot more patience to make it all come together.
