Small Town, Big Flavor: Montana’s Best Kept Food Secrets
I love to travel to new destinations and discovering unique places that are off the beaten path or referred to as "hole-in-the-wall" establishments.
It seems that we have one of those "if you know, you know" spots right here in Montana.
Skip the Chains—Eat Where Montanans Really Love
I once took a trip to Mexico, and while most of the group went to Señor Frog's, about 5 of us found a literal "hole-in-the-wall" restaurant and had the best meal along with the strongest margaritas I've had in my life and met some of the most wonderful people working there.
That's why I'll never understand people who travel to the furthest reaches of the earth and then go to the most familiar restaurant or generic big box store you can find.
What Makes a Hole-in-the-Wall Restaurant Truly Great?
Explaining to people why some of the best-tasting food they've ever had comes from the most unlikely places is difficult, but I feel there's one reason for it.

Mashed recently recognized the best "hole-in-the-wall" restaurant in each state, and for Montana, that honor goes to El Vaquero Taqueria.
Honestly, if you want to try their food, get there early, because they are only open for 3 hours a day (11a-2p) and only from Tuesday through Friday.
Given the numerous small towns scattered throughout Montana, there is a wealth of "hole-in-the-wall" restaurants for you to explore.
