The FDA is announcing an an expanded recall of a food product sold at Walgreens targeted mainly at small children over elevated levels of lead.

What food has been recalled?

Earlier this month, a recall was initiated for one lot of Sprout Organics Sweet Potato, Apple & Spinach food pouches.  This week, the recall was expanded to cover three more lots of the same flavor, for a total of four.

The recall now covers 28 states, including Montana.  I should stress that that Walgreens is just the largest and most well-known business to have sold the recalled pouches.  They have also been reported to have been sold by smaller, independent vendors as well.

What am I looking for?

Again, the only flavor being recalled is Sweet Potato, Apple & Spinach.  No other flavor of Sprout Organics is affected by the recall at present.

The items in question are 3.5 ounce pouches.  Beyond that, you want to look at the Best By Date and lot code printed on the pouch.

Here are the combinations you're after:

  • Best By Date of Oct. 29, 2025 and Lot Code 4212 (this is the lot from the original recall)
  • Best By Date of Oct. 30, 2025 and Lot Code 4213
  • Best By Date of Dec. 4, 2025 and Lot Code 4282
  • Best By Date of Feb. 4, 2026 and Lot Code 4310

You can find pictures of the product showing where to find the date and lot information on the FDA webpage for the recall, linked above.

As usual with a food recall, if you have one of the affected items, it shouldn't be consumed by anyone.  Return it to where it was purchased for a refund.
