UDSA Recall Over Frozen Chicken Containing Allergen
Restaurant kitchen staff beware: the US Department of Agriculture is announcing a massive recall of breaded chicken products due to accidental mislabeling leading to an allergen going undisclosed.
What chicken is being recalled?
The recall covers cases of breaded chicken products from Suzanna's Kitchen, a company in Georgia. Over 62 thousand pounds of chicken is being recalled.
Specifically, the recall is for 18-lb. cases containing four units of “FULLY COOKED BREADED CHICKEN PORTIONS,” with case code “P-1380 126237 B30851 23:11 K04” printed on the side of the packaging. You can see a example of what the label looks like here.
What undeclared allergen are they worried about?
Soy. The recall kicked off when the company realized that a product of theirs that contains soy had been packaged and shipped out under packaging and product codes for a different product that doesn't contain soy.
The recalled cases were all produced back in October and shipped to restaurants nationwide under labeling for Koch Foods. That means we don't need to worry about the chicken being sold in supermarkets. However, because it's frozen, there is still a chance it could be sitting in a freezer somewhere.
Thankfully, according to the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, so far there haven't been any reports of allergic reactions in connection with the recalled chicken.
So if you work in a restaurant kitchen and the brand name rings a bell, maybe do a quick check. If you do find any of the recalled chicken, don't serve it. Just throw it out.
