Will Montanans See A Tariff Refund Check?

All over the internet I keep seeing that Trump wants to send everyone except "high income people" a $2,000 tariff refund check. Then, on Sunday, he posted this on Truth Social

People that are against Tariffs are FOOLS! We are now the Richest, Most Respected Country In the World, With Almost No Inflation, and A Record Stock Market Price. 401k’s are Highest EVER. We are taking in Trillions of Dollars and will soon begin paying down our ENORMOUS DEBT, $37 Trillion. Record Investment in the USA, plants and factories going up all over the place. A dividend of at least $2000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone

I thought I'd better look into it.

Can The President Of The United States Send Out Checks To Americans?

No. Simple, truthful and scenario ending, one would think.

Earlier this year, Senator Josh Hawley tried to get Americans a quick $600 check and it was overwhelmingly rejected. The United States Treasury seems pretty cool on the rebate idea, as well.

Only Congress can approve spending America's money, including sending out checks to Americans for any reason at all, even tax returns.

If we get the checks, there's talk of using the same math equation that was used for the Covid relief checks back in the pandemic.

Could The Tariff Refunds Be Given To Montanans Another Way?

On Sunday, November 9, 2025 Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was on ABC's this week and said there had been no formal proposal to send out checks. Bessent suggested that it

could come in lots of forms. It could be just the tax decreases that we are seeing on the president's agenda. No tax on tips, no tax on overtime, no tax on Social Security, deductibility on auto loans. Those are substantial deductions that are being financed in the tax bill.

The Takeaway On The Proposed $2,000 Tariff Refund

I'm not spending that check until it's in my hand. (Better safe then over-drawn.)

And even then, $2,000 is a freckle on a duck when it comes to how expensive things are now. As much as I may want food and insurance, I'd better sock it away. IF it ever comes.
