Can You Safely Live In An RV For A Montana Winter?

With the price of housing all over the state so nuts most regular Montanans that didn't own a home before the pandemic are feeling the crunch of costs, either renting or buying.

The Real Estate Market In Montana Is Ridiculous

Buying a home in Montana right now is infuriating. Almost 17 years after my husband died, I finally feel confident enough to be a home owner again, and I have a sinking feeling I'll end up in some kind of prefab home or condo. (Farm girls aren't well suited for condo life) The homes I'm looking at were literally over $100,000 dollars cheaper before 2020. Anymore, that number is inching up to $200,000 cheaper. Who, in a one income home, would pay over $300,000 for a 2 BEDROOM HOME?

What About Living In An RV Full Time In Montana?

First off, Roger Toren said, "Tammie, they just aren't made for that. That's why people only do that in states like Arizona." We talked about it once because everywhere in Oregon you see people living in 5th wheels and the like.

Montana Owners Club says you CAN but it's kind of a whole ordeal:

One member, Dutchman Sport, had a great post about how they can use their RV when it's cold. Here is some advice from someone who knows:

  • The furnace will be running a lot. Dutchman Sport figures nearly half the heat goes to your floor
  • You'll probably burn through around 30 pounds of propane every 2-3 days
  • Watch things like water lines, or dump pipes. There's little or no protection from freezing.

Daryles suggests skirting your rig for the winter to help keep lines from freezing and keep mice out.

Ultra Heat suggests RV holding tank heaters and pipe protectors.

Harvest Host suggests insulating your windows and small space heaters for the interior.
