It seems like everyone is trying to make a buck off of everyone these days, right? Think about how many times you've had a scam phone call or text reach your phone. Or how about all of those major data breaches in the companies we're supposed to trust with our most sensitive information?

Recently, Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen announced an investigation to protect the sensitive information of Montanans.

Montana AG Investigating Major Automakers

In a press release from Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen, we learn that the Montana AG is looking into allegations of shady behavior from both Ford Motor Company and Stellantis N.V.

According to the press release, the Montana Department of Justice is investigating the automakers "following recent reports that personal driving data is collected and sold to third-party companies."

That's unfortunate, isn't it? Some of us might expect this from a digitally oriented company, like Google or even Meta... but an automaker?

"It appears vehicle owners are unaware that their driving data is being collected and sold to third parties without their consent. If true, this deceitful practice raises serious consumer protection concerns and is also a violation of state law," Attorney General Knudsen said in the press release.

"My office is committed to ensuring companies are following Montana law."

In the release, the Montana DOJ shares that the private info was sold to "third-party data and insurance companies."

What Does This Mean for The Automakers?

As it currently stands, the automakers have about one month to respond by providing all "products, services, or platforms that collect driving data, personal information, and vehicle data used to sell, license, or share with third-party recipients."

If this is true, it'll spell bad news for Ford and Stellantis N.V.

Only time will tell as the evidence comes out.
