Barn in Great Falls Burns Down with Several Animals Inside

Great Falls Rescue shared a late post on social media last night about their response to a serious fire that broke out near 10th Ave SW, near 7th St SW.

"Please avoid the area and use alternate routes while responders work the scene," officials said in their original post. "Keeping the area clear allows crews and emergency vehicles to operate safely."

Now, we have the sad news and result of what happened.

Great Falls Fire Rescue Reports Several Losses in Fire

Great Falls Fire Rescue dealt with plenty of challenges in their attempt to get control of a barn fire that was located at 1010 10th Ave SW.

"The barn was located a significant distance from 10th Ave SW and the nearest fire hydrant, creating challenges for crews in establishing an adequate water supply," Great Falls Fire Rescue said in their statement. "Once a water supply was established, firefighters continued to face difficulty accessing the main body of the fire due to the barn being connected to additional structures that had also become involved."

Because of the challenges, GF Fire Rescue also had "all four on-duty GFFR crews" on the scene with assistance from Malmstrom Air Force Base and Montana Air National Guard fire departments with off-duty personnel standing by for emergencies.

Sadly, GF Fire Rescue announced that "a number of chickens" along with seven puppies and their mother died in the fire. They were, however, able to rescue horses inside the barn.

While no human injuries were reported, the barn is a total loss. Fire officials do believe an attached storage building can be saved. The fire is not believed to be criminal in nature.
