Montana 2026 Midterms Take An Unexpected Turn
Well, just when you thought the 2026 midterms were already shaping up to be interesting, Montana politics threw us a curveball.
Ryan Zinke, Montana’s 1st District Representative, announced he will not seek re-election in 2026. He says the decision comes down to his health.

Zinke has undergone multiple surgeries and says more are ahead. In a statement, he explained:
“The injuries sustained from a career in Special Operations are not immediately life threatening, but the repair cannot be deferred any longer and recovery will require considerable time with Lola and the family,” Zinke said. “My judgement and experience tell me it is better for Montana and America to have full-time representation in Congress than run the risk of uncertain absence and missed votes.”
His decision instantly makes the race more interesting, especially for Democrats hoping to flip the seat. But Republicans did not waste any time responding.
Aaron Flint Enters The Race For Montana’s 1st District
Almost immediately, Aaron Flint announced he is running. Flint, who previously served as Zinke’s State Director for his congressional offices in Montana and is well known as the host of the statewide "Montana Talks" radio show.
Flint, who moved his "Montana Talks" show from Billings to Kalispell last year, has deep Montana roots, having grown up between Glasgow and the Flathead. He retired as a lieutenant colonel with more than 20 years of service in the Army National Guard and Reserve.
As of publication, former Montana State senator Al Olszewski, and current Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen have also entered the race.
So buckle up, Montana. It looks like this race just got a lot more interesting.
